Note: An Advanced 1st student is a former K5 who has already completed Phonics Levels B:1 and B:2. A second grade student would normally have completed Phonics Level B as a first grader. An older student understands Level B’s Beginning-to-Read skills but needs more advanced phonics instruction.
After teaching the daily lesson in Phonics Lessons for Flashcards 94-118: Level C:3 (Part 211), use the Phonics Workbook Instructions/Answer Key: Level C:3 (Part 212AK) to help your student complete the four related Phonics Workbook C:3 (Part 212) pages per lesson. This 211-page workbook’s daily assignments are divided into two days each: The first day’s two-page workbook assignment covers these exercises: PHONICS EXERCISE: The student is to first read the verse(s) at the top of the phonics page, and then the parent-teacher presents the Spiritual Application. Next, instructions are given for the contents of that day’s phonics exercise. SPELLING LESSON: After the phonics page is completed, the list of 10 spelling words, which includes applicable rules and exceptions, is to be thoroughly introduced. For the best results, unknown words are to be looked up in a dictionary and then each used in a sentence. The lessons will include open/closed syllables, vowel variants, consonant variants, silent letters, and simple prefixes and suffixes. Additional examples are located in the Christ-Centered Phonics Drill Reader (Part 357), which is an excellent spelling resource that follows the introductory order of Phonics Flashcards 1-118. A full list of all the spelling rules are at the PDR’s Appendix 2. The second day’s two-page workbook assignment covers these exercises: VOCABULARY DEVELOPMENT: Each SPELLING LESSON is reinforced through a variety of vocabulary exercises with homonyms, rhyming words, root words, syllabication, contractions, silent letters, analogies, prefixes, suffixes, and interesting puzzles. For easier reference, this page is located to the right of the spelling lesson. As needed, provide helpful explanations. PENMANSHIP/SPELLING PRE-TEST: Cursive penmanship practice is continued at Level C:3. As the letters are traced, the parent-teacher is to supervise to make sure the correct stroke sequence is being followed. Next, after a quick review of spelling rules and exceptions, the spelling words are then to be dictated in random order. Misspelled words on the Pre-Test are to be written correctly five times each. At the end of the school week, all missed words should be re-tested.
